Stratifyd is on a mission to help move the dial for women in technology by using our voice within the tech community and supporting local girls and women in tech organizations. We recently teamed up with the Dottie Rose Foundation, Girls Who Code, and MapAnything to participate in two amazing events to promote and celebrate girls in technology.
Stratifyd and the Dottie Rose Foundation hosted a Girls in Technology Day for girls ranging from 9 to 12 years old. The day was filled with hands-on activities that provided a holistic view of life at a tech startup. Students learned how to create landing pages with Adobe Illustrator, manipulate code to spark movement in robots and analyze customer feedback using the Stratifyd platform.
“Having an organization like Dottie Rose to help instill a passion for STEM in young girls is amazing,” Stratifyd CEO, Derek Wang said. “Tech is a rich industry filled with vast career opportunities and we’re honored to play a role in inspiring the next generation of industry leaders.”
The Dottie Rose Foundation serves to connect the dots within the technology and computer science spaces to educate, support, and inspire the next generation. Their vision is to create a supportive algorithm to close the gender gap for women and girls in STEM.
“The Stratifyd team did an amazing job putting the event together for the girls,” Founder and CEO of the Dottie Rose Foundation, Sharon Jones said. “We did an ‘analytics’ activity after the stations, using sticky notes to showcase what they learned and enjoyed. I was thrilled to see how much they understood about coding and the importance of customer sentiment by the end of the day.”
Students also had the opportunity to ask Stratifyd employees questions during a round table discussion. Some of the most memorable questions included, “Did you want a job in tech when you were a kid?” and “If you could have a different job at Stratifyd, what would you choose and why?”
Afterwards, students were paired with Stratifyd team members from different departments for an in-depth look at a day in the life at a tech startup.
“Several of the tiny humans were adamant about shadowing our CTO [Kevin O’Dell],” Stratifyd Senior Marketing Director, Cara Walters said. “It was amazing to see how excited they were about not only pursuing a career in tech, but one day becoming C-level professionals.”
The Stratifyd team also participated in a Girls in Technology event with MapAnything for the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program, a seven-week introductory computer science program for 10th and 11th grade girls.
Girls Who Code is a national non-profit organization working to close the gender gap in technology and change the image of what a programmer looks like and does. They’re leading the movement to inspire, educate, and equip young women with the computing skills to pursue 21st- century opportunities.
“MapAnything, a Salesforce company, is committed to preparing students for the jobs that will exist tomorrow,” SVP and GM of MapAnything, John Stewart said. “Computer science skills are the foundation of the future of work and we're excited to be involved with such great organizations like Girls Who Code."
Students got a behind-the-scenes look at life at a local startup and different ways tech is incorporated into the workplace. They learned about programming, product testing, graphic design, and the importance of analyzing customer feedback and sentiment.
“The girls needed to see the diversity within the workplace,” Program Instructor for Girls Who Code, Leyli Garryyeva said. “The event showed the students that they have this amazing opportunity in their own backyard that many women didn’t have before in technology.”
