Stratifyd Spotlight: Roy Skinner

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Roy Skinner is our Creative Marketing Associate. At first glance, he’s one of the quieter members of the marketing team, but after spending a few minutes with him, his true personality takes over. He may not be one of the most outgoing characters in the office, but he has the ability to make people laugh and is always willing to help others.

Skinner was born in Kraków, Poland. He was adopted at three months old and brought to his hometown of New Canaan, CT.

He has two degrees: A BA in English – Film & Media from Bucknell University and an MA in Digital Media and Design from the University of Connecticut. Skinner spent more than 20 years of his life on the tennis court, until he suffered a career-ending injury heading into his junior year of college.

His experience and passion for sports led him to a Motion Graphics & Animation internship with the Charlotte Hornets. During his time with the Hornets, he was able to design some of the 360° LED screens that are found throughout the arena.

“After my internship with the Hornets ended, I knew I wanted to stay in Charlotte,” Skinner said. “It’s an amazing city. It’s young, full of growth, and it helps that the weather is a lot warmer than back home in Connecticut.”

As a young marketing and graphics professional in a new city, it was important for Skinner to find a full-time position that fostered career development on a company-wide scale.

“For me, it was really all about the growth,” Skinner said. “I wanted a place where I could come in and feel like I was needed and that my work counted for something. From the very beginning, I was involved in creating content that was immediately posted onto our website and social media.”

Skinner joined the Stratifyd family in 2018. His primary responsibilities are editing and distributing video content and creating animations for emails, social media, and blogs. He is currently leading the Vidyard project with the Sales Development Representative (SDR) team.

“When I first started with Stratifyd, our graphics and video output was pretty minimal,” Skinner said. “It was really exciting to start from scratch and help build our graphics and video content from the ground up.”

So far, his favorite part about working for Stratifyd is the family-oriented atmosphere.

“Every team at Stratifyd is genuinely interested in what other departments are working on,” Skinner said. “If I’m interested in another team’s project, they’ll take a minute and explain it in detail. I think this really benefits Stratifyd as a whole because it allows us to understand how each department impacts the company.”

When he’s not at work, you can often find him hiking with his friends or brewery hopping with his girlfriend’s 5-year-old dog, Kuechly (Go ‘Thers!).

Q&A With Roy Skinner

Q: What’s your favorite thing about living in Charlotte?
A: Aside from the weather, what I love about Charlotte is the excitement and energy that the city encompasses. Oh, and don’t forget about the plethora of breweries within the city limits.

Q: What sparked your interest in Stratifyd?
A: What caught my eye was first and foremost the opportunity for career growth and the startup culture. With the unparalleled culture at Stratifyd and the ability to set your own career path goals and be able to work towards those every day with support from everyone at the company, how could anyone pass on working here?

Q: What is your favorite brand to follow on social media and why?
A: My favorite brand to follow on social media is either the NHL, earthpix, or any outdoors/fishing page, such as Simms, Orvis, Patagonia, and Costa. I have always had a strong passion for the outdoors and hockey, arguably the greatest sport in the world.

Q: What is on your travel bucket list?
A: I would say the number one destination I want to visit is Kraków, Poland so I can see where I was born. After Kraków, there’s a list of places (in no particular order): Spirit Island, Canada, Phraya Nakhan Cave, Thailand, and Waitomo Glowworms Cave, New Zealand.

Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
A: Work hard in silence and let success make the noise. You can’t control most things in this world, but you can control yourself, your actions, and your work ethic.

Q: What's one thing you can't live without?
A: Friends and family. There is nothing better than having a strong support group that can make you laugh and enjoy life while having your back in everything.

Q: What's the bravest thing you’ve ever done?
A: I went swimming with sharks in the Galapagos the summer after second grade. No cage.

Q: What’s your spirit animal and why (this can also be a person/role model)?
A: Either a dog or a mongoose. A dog because they’re just the best and have unconditional love and loyalty. A mongoose because they aren’t afraid of anything. They’ll see a cobra and use ninja-esque moves to take it down.

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: Memory. I have a terrible memory, so any improvement would be helpful.

Q: One cause that you’re passionate about?
A: Nature conservation. Especially in today’s world. The world is a beautiful place and we’re quickly destroying its beauty with pollution.
